Why I Stuck with 25 Minutes (After Trying to Change It)
I tried adjusting my Pomodoro session length several times before understanding why 25 minutes kept working better than my 'improvements.'
When I first started using a Pomodoro timer, 25 minutes felt like an arbitrary number someone picked decades ago that I had no reason to trust. So I experimented — 45 minutes, 50 minutes, even a full hour, assuming longer sessions meant more output.
They didn't, at least not for me.
What happened when I went longer
The 45-minute sessions felt productive for the first 20 minutes, then I'd notice myself rereading sentences, half-finishing thoughts, or opening a new tab "just to check something quick." I was still sitting there, technically in the session, but not really working anymore. I just hadn't given myself permission to stop.
25 minutes, it turns out, sits almost exactly where my real focus tends to run out before it starts visibly degrading. Cutting the session there meant I was stopping near my actual limit, not well past it.
What happened when I went shorter
On low-energy days, I tried much shorter sessions instead — and this is where having a fully adjustable timer actually mattered. In 100xFocus, the Pomodoro Focus duration is a slider you can drag all the way down to 1 minute if that's genuinely what a moment calls for. I didn't expect to ever use that end of the range, but on days where 25 minutes felt impossible to commit to, starting with something absurdly small — even just 1 or 2 minutes — was enough to get moving. More often than not, by the time that tiny session ended, I had enough momentum to just continue into a longer one.
Where I landed
I don't use exactly 25 minutes every day anymore. I use it as the default and drag the slider down on days I'm struggling to start, or up for something I'm already deep into and don't want to break unnecessarily. The number matters less than paying attention to whether I'm actually still focused when the timer ends, or just waiting it out.
That's the whole reason durations in 100xFocus aren't locked — Pomodoro Focus, Short Break, and Long Break are each their own slider in Preferences, adjustable to whatever a specific day actually needs, from 1 minute up. No account required to change it, and no ads competing for attention while you decide.
